Located close to Lagos are a selection of fine golf with a visit are the recently redesigned Palmares, Boa Vista and of course Henry Cotton designed and championship golf course Penina. There are several more course located less than 30 mins drive which include Morgado, Parque De Floresta, Pinta and Gramacho.
Penina
The first golf course to be built in the Algarve was the Penina Championship Course is considered to be Sir Henry Cotton’s masterpiece and has hosted the Portuguese Open on several occasions.
The quality and success of this course was to encourage the building of many other courses in the region. The Championship Course was completely rebuilt in 1995, although it has retained most of its original features. Please note soft pikes only on the championship course.
Palmares
Palmares is a course of great scenic beauty, offering a perfect blend of the variety between links and inland golf, with a superb restaurant from where there are breathtaking views over Lagos bay. Palmares was recently redesigned and runs behind the Meia-Praia beach, a vast expanse of white sand and high dunes across the railway line the fairways wind there way through many valleys bordered by pine-trees, affording beautiful views over Lagos bay and the mountains of Serra de Monchique.
Boavista
The Boavista golf course is one of the Algarve‘s most recent courses and is characterized by the typically Algarvian landscape. Built on a flat area just 200 metres from the Atlantic, close to one of the best known beaches on the southern coast of Portugal (Praia da Luz). Half the course is located in the National Agricultural Reserve.
Alamos
The Alamos course is set in a large 980 hectare estate, the main characteristic is its large greens which place demand on good putting skills as they are often raised above the fairway approach and involve several levels. Set beside its sister golf course Morgado in beautiful unspoilt countryside. It provides a wide variety of holes, each hole is well delimited by native trees. The course runs next to two large lakes, through wide valleys with superb views of the Monchique mountain range.
Morgado
Morgado was opened in 2003 and is situated 15km north of Portimao. Expansive fairways and spacious greens include 104 bunkers and several water features in the form of small lakes and dams. It is of the Algarve‘s largest courses at 6,399m long. It‘s a flexible course in that there are various pin positions on the greens that can either soften a hole, or make it more interesting. It has a huge club house and you can see 80% of the course from the terrace which runs the length of the club house.
Oceanico Faldo Course
The Faldo course was opened in 2008 and was designed by Nick Faldo with strategic play in mind this 6598m par 72 championship course demands careful positioning to score well. The land at Amendoeira is dramatic and the project has the potential to be a real talking point in the Algarve. Oceanico O Connor Jnr Course
This championship course features lush landscapes and orange groves in a low lying valley where large areas of lakes and watercourses demand accurate positioning. The course was designed by Christy O‘ Connor Jnr and opened in 2008. The course has tees that are generally connected to the fairways, but its greater overall distance, the water hazards and big greens provide its challenge. Golfers must also be prepared to read the subtly contoured putting surfaces that are a strong feature.
Oceanico Victoria
This course was designed by Arnold Palmer, it has several man made hazards which provide changes for the players and the 17th hole the signature hole has a total of twelve water cascades bordering the right side of the hole. The course covers 90 hectares and is one of the best and most sophisticated golf courses in Europe. Every care has been taken to ensure the preservation of the wetlands and the olive and almond trees. The course features 5 to 6 tees per hole, wide, undulating fairways, extensive water hazards and cleverly positioned bunkers. The Victoria course is a 18-hole, par 72 championship layout, measuring 6609m from the back trees.
Oceanico Old Course Vilamoura
The Frank Pennink designed parkland golf course opened in 1969 and was modernised 27years later. Situated in the heart of Vilamoura it is one of the oldest in the region and renowned all over the golfing world. It is from the English school of course design. The first holes are easy and inviting with a reachalbe par-4s. Club selection will play an important part of your game, and straight shots will be needed. The back nine has three interesting par-5s. The sixteenth providing a 522 metre challenge for good length and straight hitting. This is one of the courses in Portugal that stay in the memory of visiting golfers.
